Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We primarily rescue mammals and marsupials (opossums), but we do also intake reptiles and amphibians on a case-by-case basis.
**NOTE: BIRDS**Whalen Wildlife has a state license in Massachusetts -- a federal license is needed to rehab most birds (any migratory, native bird). If you've found an injured or orphaned bird, please see below for resources on rehabilitators to contact.
(Note: in nearby life or death situations where collection/triaging is needed, feel free to reach out to us! We will always do our best to help an animal find the proper placement.)
If you have found an animal you believe to be injured or orphaned, it is crucial to contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or Animal Control Officer to guide you. You can also use this link for help:

1) DO NOT FEED OR OFFER WATER to the animal unless directly asked to by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
2) Avoid handling the animal. Never handle wildlife with bare hands! Wild animals are generally not too keen on being handled by humans, and can become very stressed and potentially dangerous. Please seek advice from a professional before handling a wild animal -- and again, no bare hands!**
3) You can find a local wildlife rehabilitator in Massachusetts by following this link:

You can also call Tufts Wildlife in N. Grafton at 508-839-7918 or New England Wildlife Center in S. Weymouth at 781-682-4878 for guidance.
If the animal in question is in critical condition or imminent danger, and you feel safe doing so, gently place the animal in a cardboard box with air holes and place in a warm, dark, QUIET location while you reach out to the above resources! Minimal handling is a MUST for the safety of the humans and animals involved.
****Please keep in mind that wildlife rehabbers are volunteers. Many of us have families, full-time jobs, and other obligations - we do our best to answer everyone in a timely fashion, but sometimes we aren't able to. ****
At this time, Whalen Wildlife is not accepting volunteers. Keep an eye on our social media for when we open up volunteer applications!
